The original novels had the best example of an evil character (Raistlin) that still worked with the party and was actually the most interesting character in the books. The outcome of major event in Krynn's history was effectively foretold due to alignment violations - e.g. For better or worse this effectively makes three camps - Redemption, Balance, Power. At least in the 2E sourcebook, there is an Overgod with very specific ideas about how each alignment should behave - and reality itself punishes those who don't.
